Does Luma Train on Your Uploads?

Short answer: on a regular Luma account, its terms say it can.

What the terms say

Luma's Terms of Use were last updated on May 14, 2026. For paying users, Luma gets a license to host and use what you upload, including to "create, test, improve, train, or otherwise develop the artificial intelligence or machine learning models." The license on what Luma makes for you covers the same purpose.

On a free account the license is wider. It adds the right to display and distribute your content publicly.

The API and Enterprise are different

Luma's API terms and Enterprise terms are separate documents, and we haven't read them in full. Search results describe them as promising not to train on your inputs and outputs, but don't take our word for it. If you build on Luma's API, those are the pages that apply to you, so read them directly. If you use the regular app, the terms above are the ones that count.

One more thing worth knowing

The same terms say you can use what Luma makes for you commercially only if it was made during a paid subscription period. So the training question and the commercial-use question are both tied to which plan you're on.

If that's a problem

Ask Luma whether your use is covered by the API or Enterprise terms. Or use a tool that doesn't train on uploads. Ours doesn't. See BetterVideo vs Luma for the side-by-side, or the full list for all three tools.

A note on these facts

BetterVideo is independent. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Runway, Luma, Kling or any other company named here, and their names belong to their owners. We use them only to say which product we mean.

Everything about other companies comes from their own public pages, which we read on October 20, 2026. This is our review of what those pages say, not a claim about how any company behaves in practice, what it intends, or how it treats your data. Where we couldn't confirm something, we say so. Terms, prices and features change without notice, so open the linked source and read the current version before you rely on it. This page is general information and not legal, financial or purchasing advice, and we can't promise it is complete or still current. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will correct it quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A little. The license on a free account is wider, since it includes public display and distribution. Both versions allow training, according to the terms we read.

The terms we read allow commercial use of results made during an active paid subscription. Free-plan results aren't covered the same way. Read section 4.9 before you rely on this.

Try it with one short video

One credit makes a short Full HD video with music or a voiceover. Credits never expire and there's no subscription, so a single test costs you almost nothing.
